Michael Armeno: Continuing The Tradition
 My great grandfather was an ornamental plasterer who traveled worldwide practicing his trade. My grandfather cast cement ornaments and I can still see his work when I visit my home in Vasto, Italy. At the age of 20 I was privileged to apprentice with sculptor and ornamentation specialist Amerigo Catani of North Bergen, NJ. Originally from Tuscany, he followed the family line of plaster ornament tradesmen. In 1981, upon retiring, he gave me his precious handmade ornament tools (from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence). These tools had been in his family for generations and I treasure them. The next fifteen years were spent with Boro Plastering Co. in Manhattan until May of 1991 when I started my own company. In an ongoing effort to expand my trade, I recently returned to Italy and trained in the art of Venetian plaster. |
